Our school will be administering the Prevention Needs Assessment Survey to students in grades 7 - 12, in October/November 2026. The survey is designed to improve our understanding of youth alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use, as well as youth crime, delinquency, and related problem behaviors. Our goal in better understanding these behaviors is to more effectively target our efforts to prevent them. The survey is sponsored by the Alliance for Better Communities and Youth Alliance.
We want to ensure that all parents are notified about the survey being conducted and to provide as much information about the survey as possible. As a parent, you have the right to prohibit your child's participation; however, I hope that you will allow your child to participate.
The following are facts about the survey to help you make an informed decision about your child's participation:
1. It is voluntary. Your child does not have to participate. Neither you nor your child is required to give a reason for not participating. Students who do not participate will not be required to answer any questions.
2. It is anonymous and confidential. The survey is designed to protect your child's and the school's privacy. No names or other identifying information will be recorded. The survey will be administered electronically. Therefore, there will be no paper record of your child's responses.
3. The survey instrument is well tested. The survey, developed in the early 1990s, has been given to millions of students in the United States. The information from the survey has been used to help prevent a variety of adolescent problem behaviors.
A copy of the survey is available for you to review at our school. You may also call Anita Seefried-Brown at the Alliance for Better Communities at Pivot at 315-788-4660.
The results obtained from the survey are more likely to be accurate and precise if more students participate. Therefore, we urge you to allow your child to participate in this important survey. You do not need to notify the school or sign anything to allow your child to participate.
If you DO NOT want your child to participate, please let your child's principal know in writing by October 30, 2026. If you decide to not give permission for your child's participation, he or she will be given an alternative activity during the survey period.
Thank you for your cooperation. This survey plays an important part in our efforts to prevent drug use, delinquency, and other kinds of adolescent problem behaviors. Again, I hope you will allow your child to participate.
Sincerely, Principals

The Lady Falcons basketball teams traveled to Syracuse last month to watch the Orange women take on Louisville. While there, they also celebrated Girls and Women in Athletics Day. They met members of the team and got autographs and pictures. Some were able to meet Katherine Switzer, who was honored by SU for being the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon in 1967, while training as an SU student. What a great day!
