The students of the Middle School Summer Program were busy last week as they finished up a cosmic summer session. They reviewed planets and constellations and created scale models using marshmallows and pretzels. One student presented her findings in Spanish as a teacher provided the English translation. Students used cotton balls and plastic cutlery to complete a weightless relay. And, to end the week in true summer fashion, students enjoyed an ice cream social. (Thanks, Mrs. Brown, for the out-of-this-world SL Space Rocket sticker!)
The Middle School Summer Program focused on Greek Mythology and Constellations. After space traveling back in time, students pushed beyond the edges of the universe and arrived at the center of their own imaginations. Once there, students played a game of "silent telephone" and "drew" constellations on the backs of other students. Groups also created "new" constellations with glue and glitter and then, in the tradition of ancient Greece, imagined myths and wrote about them. In addition to all that creative work, students found time to fit in a good, old-fashioned game of kickball. (I'm sure the ancient Greeks, with their Olympic spirits, would appreciate this too!)
Week #2 of South Lewis Middle School finished with activities that are out of this world! Students focused on constellations and completed several activities related to the solar system (one with Oreos that represented the moon phases -- yum yum). Students also enjoyed visiting an onsite planetarium and were able to get up close and personal with the stars and objects that make up our universe. Looks like our kids have all the right stuff!
Last week the South Lewis Stellar Summer Middle School Adventure blasted off to explore the Solar System. Students created a scale model of our solar system and gathered facts and figures about each planet (pictures attached). Up next, students will continue to enhance reading, writing, and critical thinking skills and will further investigate the universe with a planetarium! Stay tuned for updates from our Star Travelers!

Once upon a time, there was a senior class that ... yada yada, pandemic, social distancing, face masks, blah blah blah ... GOT TO HAVE A SENIOR PROM! Congratulations to all of the Class of 2021 members who attended the Senior Prom at the Hayloft on Saturday, June 5. It was a real-live fairy tale, not virtual in any way (well except for the Grand March -- which now can be viewed through a link on the South Lewis website), complete with a court. Shown here are: King/Queen: Blake Wojnar and Olivia Weiss Prince/Princess: Harley Post and Lauren McGuire Lord/Lady: Peter Gilbert/Natalie Steria Duke/Duchess: Trevor Griffith and Miranda Bourgeois And they all lived happily ever after. The end.
Please visit our home page at www.southlewis.org for important information regarding a Mask Mandate Stakeholder Survey and provide feedback to the District. Please review the attached informational flyer and letter from the NYSDOH to the CDC.
Next in the Senior Spotlight Lineup is Devan G. Maurer. Devan is currently a Criminal Justice student at the Howard G. Sackett Technical Center in Glenfield and has been accepted at Mohawk Valley Community College and at SUNY Canton. Throughout his high school years, Devan maintained law and order on the soccer field. This year he was selected as an All-Star and, in 2018, he was a member of the Section III Championship Team. The verdict is in: Devan is a winner in our book, and we look forward to many great things from in the future!
Now back to our regularly scheduled program: Showing up in the Senior Spotlight this morning is Courtney A. Ebersol. Courtney is an active member of FFA and last week made South Lewis Headlines as one of the participants in Drive-Your-Tractor-to-School Days. In addition to a full schedule of agricultural activities, Courtney found time in her high school years to be a part of the soccer and volleyball teams. In the fall, Courtney plans to head to Cobleskill where she will major in Dairy Science. Future headline: Ebersol, like milk, for a stronger tomorrow! Best of luck, Courtney.
And some final Tractor Days pictures to challenge perceptions: Courtney Ebersol and Ella Sherman show the world that "princess" and "farmer" aren't mutually exclusive. Carl Sherman shows the world that "fun" and "school" aren't mutually exclusive. Thank you all for participating and for "Learning to Do" and "Doing to Learn". Your simple insight is a credit to us all.
Class of 2021 Members Christopher Higby and Jordan Brown both received "Best Overall" awards for their tractors (Chris yesterday and Jordan today). Chris also received an award today for "dirtiest" tractor. Thanks, fellas, no matter the state of tidiness for your rides, we appreciate that you participated in this good, clean fun! (Thanks, Mrs. Delles and the Student Council for keeping alive the Spirit Week traditions.)
Another Drive-Your-Tractor-to-School-Day Award: Winning the distinction of "Best Antique Tractor" is sophomore Warren Covey. Warren rolled in this morning with 1952 Farmall. We South Lewis Falcons sure do appreciate that color, and some of really like the Vans too (though not sure they are farm safe). Thanks, Warren, for adding to Spirit Week fun!
South Lewis High School Spirit Week is all about showing true Falcon Spirit, and there's nothing like Tractor Day to DRIVE home (or to school) that point! Chris Higby, Courtney Ebersol, Andrew Higby, Ella Sherman, and Jordan Brown all proudly showed up today with farm machinery of all sizes, colors, makes, models, and years. It is a sight to behold, so, if you've got the time, treat yourself and drive on by the Turin campus. You won't be disappointed.
Congratulations to this guy, Hunter Nickerson, who was an award winner in today's Drive-Your-Tractor-to-School-Day Contest. Hunter's award MAY have had something to do with leaking the most fluid. Even Mother Nature felt that Hunter was deserving of the title: at the end of the day, as Hunter drove off el fresco, the heavens opened, and showered down upon our smiling country boy. (Many thanks to Mrs. Howard who coordinated this part of the Spirit Week celebration!)
Let's turn a PAIGE in the Senior Spotlight and present another South Lewis Class of 2021 member: Paige M. Axtell. Paige has spent her high school career exploring possibilities and getting involved. Throughout the years, Paige has participated in various sports, including swimming, basketball, and softball, and, in the spring of 2019, Paige was a member of the Section Winning Track & Field Team. What an honor! Good luck to you, Paige! We can't wait to see how you write the next chapter of your life.
Next on the docket for the Senior Spotlight is Grace E. Mear. Grace, who has made a name for herself as a South Lewis songbird and musician, hopes to one day be well known in legal circles also. Grace has been accepted into Champlain College's Law Program and intends to lend her voice as a prosecuting attorney in the courtroom. In addition to being a member of the National Honor Society and a South Lewis Scholar, Grace is an athlete who has played soccer, softball, and volleyball. Grace, we have no objections to your future plan. It is in your court now!
Stepping into the Senior Spotlight this morning is Ethan G. Youngs. Ethan fits the role as "the strong and silent type": he is kind, quiet, quick with a smile, and always ready to lend a helping hand. Ethan is a well-rounded student whose interests vary from art to economics, from science to physical fitness . This year, Ethan was named a South Lewis Lions Scholar and plans to attend college next year. Ethan has been accepted by Mohawk Community College and Utica College. Congratulations, Ethan! We applaud you for remaining South Lewis Strong!
Smile, Lauren M. McGuire, you are next in the Class of 2021 Spotlight! Lauren, a South Lewis Lions Scholar and a National Honor Society Member, is college bound and has received acceptance to SUNY Broome and SUNY Jefferson. In her high school years, Lauren has played soccer, been a vital member of the Falcon volleyball program, was a part of the track & field team, and, this year, participated in the varsity ski and golf programs. With her sunny disposition Lauren can easily put a smile on your face, and, we are in luck, her future plans include brightening smiles for a living as a dental hygienist. Way to keep the world shiny and bright, Lauren.
It's that time of year when we spotlight the South Lewis Seniors and their achievements. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the show! First up is Ian W. Anderson. Ian, a South Lewis Lions Scholar, is ready to take his show on the road to SUNY Brockport, which is the perfect venue to show off his all-round athletic abilities. Throughout high school, Ian has been a Falcon football player, and, when that wasn't an option in the fall 2020 season, Ian became a Falcon "futbol" player on the varsity soccer team. On the varsity baseball team, Ian has been a pitcher for the past four years; and, as a member of the varsity basketball team, Ian scored 1008 career points. Great work, Ian. Thanks for sharing your love of the game -- any game -- and for showing true Falcon spirit!

Yesterday, the South Lewis Meal Delivery Crew once again dispatched food troops to drop off breakfast and lunch to students who are on the front line of education at home. Seen here are administrators, teachers, and cafeteria staff working side by side (while maintaining safe distance) to load up the buses.
The South Lewis staff make food delivery look easy. Pictured here: Jodi McConnell and Margaret Krokowski clear the decks on the loading dock; Pam Stewart (Captain of the Cafeteria Crew) and Andy Krokowski (Admiral of the South Lewis Fleet) take pride in their work; and Charity Hoffert and Kevin Burdick signal "thumbs up" to get the show on the road.

COVID-19: Guidance Update New guidance has been released where the NYS Dept. of Health (NYSDOH) requires an initial 24-hour closure when a student or staff member attended school prior to being confirmed as a COVID-19 case. During this initial 24-hour period the school shall take steps to clean and disinfect the school while the NYSDOH conducts an investigation to determine the contacts the individual may have had within the school community. The school must then take direction from the NYSDOH about continued closure, opening or other potential actions. At this time there are no confirmed or suspected cases within our school community.

I knew in a instant it must be St. Strong Man. As rapid as a Falcon he flew in his 3-D printed sled and then to the South Lewis community he said, "Minus what? This is nothing! We are stronger than this." He ended this statement with a pump of the fist, and then shouted joyously before drove out of sight, "Happy holidays to all and to all a good life!"

A great big SOUTH LEWIS STRONG CONGRATULATIONS to Senior Songbird, Katie Vito, for achieving the honor of performing this weekend in the NYSSMA All-State concert. It's been 20+ years since a SL student was a part of this annual performance. Katie's other accolades: soloist in Bi-County & Area All-State concerts and NY representative in the US National Chorus. Way to sing from your Falcon heart!
And finally, in the upper regions of the state, four SL XC runners battled it on a cold and clear Saturday morning at the NYSPHSAA State Championship. Collin Stafford placed 44th in his race. Yesterday, Briar Schweinsberg, Lauren McGuire, Courtney D'Ambrosi, and Kallie Bauter, members of YAC (Youth Advisory Council), planted two apple trees in the Turin Park. This is just one of the ways this group is branching out in the South Lewis community. This group plants seeds of hope for the future.
The Fun Run for the Fall Festival is canceled due to the weather. All other activities will go on as planned.
DONATE YOUR DENIM AND SHARE A LITTLE LOVE That's the message of the SL NHS Blue Jean Drive going on NOW throughout the district. Does FFA stand for "Fantastic! Fabulous! Amazing!"? These FFA students show it all as Sophia Sabatini and Courtney Ebersol show off Holstein Beauties; as Emmalee Marks shows off her foliage knowledge (say that five times fast); and as Aubree Domagala, Miranda Bourgeois, and Chris Higby show off their prize ribbons at the Lewis County Fair.

Students stir Markham's maple cream to the right consistency for eating. D-LICIOUS! Cortney Markham, a fourth generation farmer began sugaring as a hobby. Now, his hobby is a family-run operation with 3500 taps. Every year, Markham's Maple Shanty ships to places all over the U.S. Thanks for sharing with US!
Week 4 of the middle school summer enrichment program focuses on local industry and business. Yesterday, students enjoyed a showing of "The Lion King" at Lowville's Town Hall Theater. Originally an opera house, the theater has been in operation since 1949 and was once "heralded as the most outstanding beautiful theater in Northern New York." Many thanks to the O'Brien family, the owners, for hosting our young movie buffs.
Also from the courts of South Lewis: Coach Gino works with volleyball players to keep fingers nimble and bodies flexible in the off-season. Way to pass, jump, and ... clean up, ladies!
